Medical information management

Medical Physicists working at the University Hospital of Heraklion compose and publish technical specifications for modern medical information management software and hardware infrastructure concerning the clinical laboratories of medical imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy departments of the University Hospital. The medical information, presented on these laboratories, is mainly consisted of text and images. The Medical Physics Laboratory (MPL) :
  1. is actively participating on the design and implementation of texts and images relational databases based upon the specific necessities of each clinical laboratory of the whole Radiology Section.
  2. preserves the stewardship, maintenance and control management of the above mentioned databases.
  3. provides relevant information and data to the authorized registrar and clinical wards related to the radiological examinations of the patient.
  4. consults the authorized registrar for all relative issues addressed to the development and optimization of medical information management (current status and future trends).
  5. is responsible for the education of medical doctors, medical technologists, secretaries, technicians etc for all relative issues addressed to medical information management.
Medical information based on texts
This category is represented by information data concerning electronic texts which are directly related to the patients of the medical imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy departments of the University Hospital of Heraklion. Such information data consists of demographic data, clinical questionnaires, medical histories and the final diagnosis of the patient. The general framework for the design and development of medical information management systems based on patient texts is referred as Radiology Information System.

Medical information based on images
This category is represented by information data concerning electronic images which are directly related to the patients of the medical imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy departments of the University Hospital of Heraklion. Such information data consists of images obtained directly from medical imaging modalities such as : Computerized Tomography units (CT), Magnetic Resonance units (MR), Ultrasound systems (US), Digital Radiology systems (DR) etc. The general framework for the design and development of medical information management systems based on patient images is referred as Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
